TUNGSTEN (V) ALKOXIDES

SYNTHESIS OF TUNGSTEN (V) ALKOXIDES:

Metathesis reaction of WCl6 with alkyl alcohol results in a reduction to W(V) and synthesis of W(OR)5.

Tungsten pentaethoxide [W(OEt)5 ]

Tungsten pentaethoxide [W(OEt)5] (M= 409.145, sum formula C10H25O5W),  dark purple-red liquid, melting point <20°C, boiling point  110°C to 115°C (1mmHg), vapour pressure:< 0.1 mm Hg @ 20 ̊C,  flash point  >110°C (230°F), moisture sensitive (reacts slowly with moisture/water) [i],[ii]

[W(OEt)5] for WO3 by AA-CVD

Tungsten pentaethoxide [W(OEt)5] (and for comparison tungsten hexaethoxide [W(OEt)6) has been applied as a single-source precursor for the AACVD preparation of WO3 thin films on soda-lime glass, quartz, Corning 7059 glass and Si substrates at 100-350 °C temperatures. The pentaethoxide precursor W(OEt)5 was vaporised at 120 °C, (whereas hexaethoxide was vaporised at 130 °C). Using the tungsten(V) ethoxide  versus tungsten(VI) ethoxide precursor had no physical or chemical affect on the resultant films; all coatings were amorphous according to XRD. Carbon contamination was 2-5 at. %. , according to XPS and RBS.  [i]
