Magnesium cyclopentadienyl-bis-N,N’-tert-butyl-C,C’-dimethydiketiminate BuN-CMe-MgCp(tBuNC(CH3)CHC(CH3)NtBu) was reported to be very volatile: it sublimes at the same temperature and pressure as MgCp2. The complex represents unusual π-coordination mode of the diketiminate ligand, which is believed to be arising from steric effects associated with the tert-butyl substituents, since formation of an η2-β-diketiminato ligand in MgCp(tBuNC(CH3)CHC(CH3)NtBu) would lead to unfavorable steric repulsions between the tBu groups and the Cp ligand. The volatility of MgCp(tBuNC(CH3)CHC(CH3)NtBu) and the poor donor characteristics of the carbon atoms in the π-β-diketiminato ligand suggest that complexes incorporating this ligand may be potentially applied as precursors for MOCVD of Mg-contaning layers.
